About El Salvador
El Salvador is the smallest country in Central America. Since pre-columbian days it has been blessed by its strategic location in the heart of Mesoamerica.
El Salvador, along with Guatemala and Honduras, came under the influence of the Mayan civilization around 1,000 BC. This was an advanced civilization related with southern Mexico.
This connection is still evident in ceremonial centres such as El Tazumal, Joya de Ceren and San Andres.
Mayan and Hahuat cultures played an important role in developing the country. These civilizations had lost most of their power and splendor by the time the Spanish Conquistadors. For many years the Spanish and the Creoles lived side by side with the Ahuachapan and Sonsonate people.
El Salvador gained its independence from Spain in September, 1821, and is a growing nation that does not seem to have had the time to grow old.
In just one decade, it has succeeded in building the best highway network and more sports arenas than any other country in Central America.
During the last few years, the country has felt the benefit of companies investing from all parts of the world. The Free Trade treaty with the United States also increased substantially the economic opportunities. It has aided in the development of the Port of La Union, which will be the largest and most modern port in Central America.
